Moses Löb Schmidt
1767 --
Name Moses Löb Schmidt [1] Born 01 May 1767 Weingarten, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany [1] Gender Male Anecdote 1801 [1] - From the Mayer Family Tree by Berthold Rosenthal: "Moses Löb came to Wiesloch in about 1800. In an 1801 list of Jews in the Kurpfalz is states that he supplied food for the Palantine-Bavarian troops. He is also recorded as a food purveyor in the surname adoption list. It's interesting to note that he was originally named Moses Löb but by 1801was already known with the surname Schmitt. As is mentioned several times in the Wiesloch Jewish Community records, Löb Schmitt died in Vienna. Both the death dates of Löb Schmitt and his wife could not be ascertained. Löb's birthplace also is not given anywhere. But there's no doubt that he was the son of Löb Benjamin in Weingarten bei Durlach, whose wife Mindel also chose the surname Schmitt, a name rather seldomly chosen by Jews.
