    • In 1890 Emma suddenly boarded a ship in Hamburg and sailed for New York City to get away from her oppressive mother-in-law,Golde Lübeck née Alexander. Adolph discovered this a few hours later and boarded another ship in Hamburg to follow after her. Emma, Adolph and his mother, Golde, had previously lived in New York City but returned to Hamburg in about 1888.
